“The Amazing Spider-Man” Covers Total Film Magazine

The Amazing Spider-Man heads up the new June issue of Total Film magazine (out tomorrow!), and inside we talk to all of the key talent involved, including – of course – star Andrew Garfield. The American-English actor takes over from Tobey Maguire to front the new franchise, and his take on the character is one of the most appealing hooks of the reboot.

“He’s a lone wolf… Erratic, angry, rebellious. It’s cool to be a nerd now. Peter is an outsider, because that’s what he has to do to protect himself. He was dropped once; he doesn’t want to be dropped again. It’s difficult to get close to him.”

Garfield also told us about the physical side of the role: “The stunts are homegrown and grass roots. I plastered my walls with page after page of artwork and spent hours trying to get my body as extreme as possible.

“I didn’t want to be a bulky guy. I wanted to be a skinny kid beating the crap out of big guys.”

The Amazing Spider-Man opens on 4 July 2012.

Emma Stone Almost Passed On “Spider-Man” Role

In an interview at WonderCon 2012 Emma Stone confessed she initially wasn’t sure about appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man as Gwen Stacy. She explained at the panel:

“I heard about Spider-Man and I didn’t think it was something I would want to be a part of. I just thought that probably isn’t right for me. Then I [auditioned with Andrew Garfield] and realized that this was a really interesting, fantastic relationship between two people and that I was being really closed-minded”

“[I] started learning more about Gwen Stacy and her history and just fell in love with the character and with the fans, too. I started reading forums and getting involved more in the comic book universe and it just became something I really wanted to be a part of, just because of all those elements.”

Andrew Speaks On His Reverence For “Spider-Man”

Andrew Garfield has admitted he “felt like I was serving something greater than me” while filming The Amazing Spider-Man. The US-born, British-raised star plays the iconic role in the latest reboot of the superhero franchise, and said he was aware of its significance.

He explained: “All the way through filming the Spider-Man movie, I felt like I was serving something greater than me. I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t. That character has been an important character to me since I was a kid. And all my concern was to make sure that Peter Parker and the symbol of Spider-Man were treated with the reverence that I have for them.”

Having consulted his predecessor Tobey Maguire about what it’s like to be at the centre of a white-hot franchise, the 28-year-old is enjoying some quiet time ahead of the media mayhem to come.

“There will be a certain stepping out, yes. I think right now all I’m trying to do is step in,” Andrew explained. “Not in a shy way. Not in a defensive way. Not in a keep-away-from-me way. It’s just that I need to know myself so well if I’m going to be able to handle this.”

“The Amazing Spider-Man” Merchandise ‘Nails’ It

This summer is going to be huge for comic book movies, and you have to expect that a few of these blockbusters will have some unusual marketing tie-ins. Even The Avengers made some strange bedfellows when they teamed up with a fragrance company to produce a cologne set.

In May cosmetic company OPI will be shipping out to stores The Amazing Spider-Man nail polish collection. Most of the titles are targeted towards the younger fans, but the double entendre for “Just Spotted the Lizard” is worth the price of the product. (Source)
