Andrew Garfield Circling Robbery Film?
Last year there was some decent bank robbing going on in theaters with the crime drama The Town from Ben Affleck, but now two of Britain’s biggest stars are each circling their own robbery films. 24 Frames has word on two different projects in development with Andrew Garfield and Ewan McGregor circling. The first film is called The Robber, a remake of the German film that would see Garfield as a marathon runner who robs banks for sport. The second project, Electric Slide, would see McGregor as “gentlemen bank robber” Eddie Dodson who robbed banks all over Southern California but without actually using a gun.
With The Robber, producer Laura Ziskin, the woman behind The Amazing Spider-Man, is also behind the project so Garfield’s involvement could certainly be official sooner than later. Apparently the original film from Benjamin Heisenberg has been described as being an existential inquiry as much as an action movie. Based on the true story of bank robber Johann Rettenberger, the film doesn’t so much develop the character in great detail, but rather keeps him shrouded in mystery. The project is currently out to writers, so it might be awhile before we hear about this one.
As for Electric Slide, the producer of Blue Valentine is behind the newest iteration of Eddie Dodson’s story which has been attempted several times before. McGregor sounds like the perfect guy to take on this role of a kind but desperate thief. The LA Times writes about Dodson, “He had turned to bank robbery, holding up tellers in West L.A., Beverly Hills and the San Fernando Valley with a polite smile and a fake gun. He was smooth, unflappable. On his best day, in November 1983, Dodson pulled off six robberies in four hours, collecting more than $13,000.” Yeah, I could definitely be into this story. A new draft of the script is due soon, so hopefully this one gets off the ground sooner than later.
Sony Pictures announced today that its new Spider-Man movie — directed by Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer) and starring The Social Network‘s Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and the heroic web-slinger — will be titled The Amazing Spider-Man. The official moniker is an obvious hat-tip to the title of the 1963 comic book that launched the Marvel superhero, and could help further differentiate the feature film project from the much-maligned Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. And it’s probably better than Amazing Fantasy, the 1962 anthology title where Spidey first appeared.
Sony also released the first official photo of Garfield in his full Spider-Man costume, making clear that — like in the comics (but unlike in the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies) — this version of Peter Parker did indeed invent his web-slingers. Check out the photo below:
Having already delved into the filming process, the very first look at Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man has been released.
The photo comes just six months after the “Social Network” actor was announced as Tobey Maguire’s replacement in the comic book reboot.
Talking about the dual role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man with MTV, Garfield said, “I realized that even Peter Parker is trying to live up to that symbol of Spider-Man he’s created.”
The 27-year-old added, “That’s what makes him so special: He’s undeniably human and going through the same struggles as everyone else. So you try to live up to that symbol and then you have to be OK not living up to it, because not even Peter Parker can do it.”
Although I don’t usually like to post candids/on-set pictures, I just couldn’t resist posting the first glimpse of Andrew as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy from the upcoming Spider-Man reboot! I have also added a new portrait shot (from the previous posted LA Times interview), and also scans from January’s edition of Harper’s Bazaar and Enterainment Weekly – thanks to Daisy and Colleen for those!
As promised, over 700 gorgeous BluRay-quality screen captures of Andrew from his role in The Social Network have just been added to the gallery – enjoy!
Happy New Year everyone! 2011 looks sure to be Andrew’s year, and I already can’t wait for Spider-Man! I have just added 678 beautiful BluRay screen captures of Andrew from his role in Never Let Me Go. This is a really beautiful film, and Andrew does an amazing job. BluRay caps of The Social Network are on their way, so stay tuned!
Thank you, Santa, for Gemma Arterton and her complete inability to keep anything to herself. Becoming somewhat notorious in recent months for speaking out about everything, from which of her films she thinks aren’t very good (“Clash of the Titans”) to meeting with directors for projects that are far from confirmed (“Alien” prequel, among others), Arterton drops another bombshell in her latest interview. Announced quite casually to Total Film upon winning their Hottest Actress award, Arterton states that a biopic of early 20th century wartime photojournalist Robert Capa is in the works (“confirmed” is the word she uses), with Spider-Man Andrew Garfield in the title role and Arterton playing his partner, Gerda Taro, the first female photojournalist to cover war from the front lines.
Though Arterton simply calls it “Capa” to Total Film, the film in question is presumably “Waiting for Robert Capa”, reported last October to be directed by Michael Mann for Columbia Pictures, adapted from “Esperando a Robert Capa”, by Spanish writer Susana Fortes. That was the one and only news to come forth regarding the film until Arterton’s pronouncement this month. There is no word on whether Mann, who is at work on producing and directing HBO series “Luck”, is still attached.
Furthermore, keep in mind that if half of the projects Arterton claim are in the works actually are in the works, she would be putting Tom Hardy to shame. Among the films she says she is attached to are “The Key to the Street”, from a script written years ago by Christopher Nolan, “In With The Outlaws”, a western/comedy co-starring Gabriel Byrne and Timothy Spall, Michael Winterbottom’s “London Fields”, and separate biopics of Marianne Faithfull and Courtney Love. Phew!
Arterton is currently on the West End stage in “The Master Builder” and will then begrudgingly do that sequel she’s contractually obligated to do, “Wrath of the Titans”. Garfield is in the heart of shooting “Spider-Man” and has never hinted at what, if any, projects he might take on after. Due to our personal bias, we hope “Capa” can get off the ground with Garfield and Arterton, but we’ll be taking this one with a giant grain of salt.
