Andrew Garfield tries to bring awareness to cancer research by shooting a new PSA for Stand Up 2 Cancer on Thursday (July 15) in Los Angeles.

The 26-year-old British actor was recently announced as the new Peter Parker in the reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. (He’s also featured in the new trailer for The Social Network, which opens Oct. 1.)

Andrew is also featured in the latest issue of EW, which has Ryan Reynolds in costume as Green Lantern on the cover.

He’s just been announced as the new “Spider-Man” and  Andrew Garfield was spotted out on a gig in Los Angeles yesterday (July 15).

The handsome actor looked to be in good spirits as he chatted with crew members from the Public Service Announcement he was filming.

In related news, Andrew is teaming up with Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake for a new film called “The Social Network.”

Directed by David Fincher (Fight Club), “The Social Network” is about the rise of Facebook, with the tagline, “You don’t make 500 million friends without making a few enemies.”

Like many of you, I’m a bit surprised that Andrew Garfield is the new Spider-Man. After weeks of hearing names like Josh Hutcherson, Jamie Bell, Anton Yelchin and more tossed around with great frequency, Garfield’s status as director Marc Webb’s webslinger is definitely a surprise.

But it’s a great surprise. I can only speak for myself, of course, but based on what I know about the actor, I’m very excited to see him as the new Spider-Man. After the jump, I’ll tell you why.

Garfield is hilarious, as you’re no doubt aware if you’ve seen him in “The Imaginarum of Doctor Parnassus.” His scenes as a veritable circus leader stringing unamused crowds along are as awkward as they are hysterical, but it’s his scenes opposite Heath Ledger that really prove that Garfield has what it takes to play Parker.

Watch this scene from “Parnassus” for yourself. Put Garfield’s British accent out of your mind and forget the fact that they aren’t throwing punches at each other. Essentially, you’re watching Garfield square off against an arch-nemesis, spewing wisecracks and getting under his enemy’s skin with surgical precision — just like Spidey. There are many scenes like this with varying degrees of humor, and many of these scenes are out and out tragic.

Director MARC WEBB has assured fans ANDREW GARFIELD is the right guy to play SPIDER-MAN – insisting cinema-goers will “love” the British actor’s portrayal of PETER PARKER.

The Other Boleyn Girl star has been announced as the replacement for Tobey Maguire, who played the web-spinning superhero in three movies before quitting the franchise earlier this year (10).

Garfield, who was born in the U.S. and raised in Britain, saw off competition from Jamie Bell and Josh Hutcherson to land the coveted part.

And (500) Days of Summer filmmaker Webb, who will step behind the camera for the next installment, is adamant studio bosses haven’t made a mistake by casting the relative unknown.

He says, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents.

“He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

Sure that ain’t chicken feed to the average Joe. But in the worlds of big budget Hollywood blockbusters, it’s really not a lot, especially when you consider how much Tobey Maguire made from his three portrayals of Parker. But then of course, we always knew Sony were going to bring this one in at a much lower budget. I suppose it’s not that surprising.

..I’m told Garfield’s pay scale on the film is around $500,000 salary on the first film, $1 million for the second one, and $2 million for the third film. All of the finalists were presented with those terms in a deal for one film and two options.]

But despite rumors(and hopes) that with the casting of the 26 year old Garfield, the movie would change its proposed high school setting for either college, or even have the story take place around the same time period that the third Raimi movie ended(sort of requel style a la The Incredible Hulk) it seems as if it’s still going to go the Spidey 90210 route.

ANDREW Garfield is delighted with his new role in the Spider-Man movie franchise — and is glad the producers didn’t pay attention to his early career!

The actor, 26, is to play the new spider-powered Peter Parker in a reboot of the franchise, notwithstanding the odd blip on his CV.

“They clearly hadn’t seen my performance as Romeo at the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre,” says Andrew. “God, I thought I was dreadful in that — and I wasn’t the only one!

“I just couldn’t get the right take on Romeo, however much I tried and tried. I really want to do at least one more Romeo and Juliet to get it right.”

At the same time, another public-school-educated, big-haired, odd-looking Englishman was plucked from near obscurity to front a Hollywood film juggernaut. Andrew Garfield, 26, was revealed as the new Spider-Man. He will replace the US actor Tobey MacGuire in the fourth instalment of the franchise about New York’s sticky-fingered superhero.

Garfield beat off stiff competition from fellow Brits such as Aaron Johnson, 20 – the star of one of the year’s biggest films, Kick Ass, and the partner of the artist Sam Taylor-Wood, who directed him in the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy – and Jamie Bell. Bell, 24, is best-known for starring in Billy Elliot, and is about to star as Tintin in Steven Spielberg’s blockbusting take on the crime-fighting boy reporter.

Garfield maybe relatively unknown, but he has acting form, winning a Bafta in 2008 for his role as Jack in Channel 4′s hard-hitting Boy A. “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents,” the director Mark Webb said.

Has Josh Hutcherson been cast in Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man, to be directed in 3D by Marc Webb? This headline may seem familiar, as it is the same headline we ran in early April when the rumor was first reported by IESB. In late May, a short list of actors in line for the role leaked online, which included Hutcherson alongside Jamie Bell; Andrew Garfield; Alden Ehrenreich; and Frank Dillane. In June, a few more actors were added to the list of possibilities, including Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson and Anton Yelchin, from Terminator: Salvation and the upcoming Fright Night remake. And last week it was reported that Sony has shot screen tests with most of the names on the list, and is still working with Webb to choose a lead so that the rest of the film can be cast around him — a decision is to be made shortly.

The studio has been testing and reading actors such as Aaron Johnson and Andrew Garfield to join James McAvoy, who is playing Professor Xavier in the movie, which focuses on the superpowered team X-Men in a younger incarnation than the previous trilogy.
