Andrew Garfield on the Spider-Man Suit: ‘I Feel Like a Kid in My Pajamas’

Andrew Garfield, still riding high from Oscar hopeful The Social Network, recently spoke to The Guardian during a break in filming on the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, in which Emma Stone co-stars.

Nothing substantial about the movie was revealed, but the 27-year-old Brit — who also starred in Never Let Me Go alongside Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley — did offer insight into the Spider-Man suit, working out and Peter Parker.

“We started shooting two weeks ago and then we have Christmas off,” Garfield shared. “Then we’re back into it for, gosh, I’m sure a fair bit of time. It’s nice, I’ve never really done a — well, I guess The Social Network took four months to shoot but I was kind of in and out; I wasn’t there every single day. But with this, I’m going to have to hibernate into this character for at least four or five months.” (Prior to shooting, Garfield said he would most likely be critical of his casting.)

The interviewer asked if he’s tried on the red and blue suit. “I have,” he answered. Does he look cool in it? Garfield laughed, “I feel like a kid in my pajamas.”

“I can only say how it feels and it feels pretty special. It feels like a dream realized and a fantasy realized,” he added. “I don’t take it lightly and I feel incredibly lucky that I get to wear spandex for the next few months.”

When he was asked about working out for the role and if he had to muscle up, Garfield revealed some nuggets about Peter Parker.

“I think Spider-Man needs strength, but Peter Parker is still a teenager, you know? That’s a very tender balance to figure out,” he said. “It’s very specific what we’re trying to achieve in terms of body type and the feeling of that. Rest assured, there’s a lot of people who are helping me with it because I have no discipline in that respect. My father’s a swimming coach and I kind of rebelled against that very, very early on so any form of physical discipline has to be really cracked with a really smart whip.”

(On a recent appearance on The Tonight Show, Stone revealed that she and Garfield shared the same trainer.)

On a semi-related side note, when the interviewer praised Garfield’s ability to “straddle” the “Englishness” of Never Let Me Go as well as seamlessly enter into “modern America” in The Social Network, Garfield, always his self-deprecating self, said with a laugh, “I can given no credit for that. I just auditioned for both of those things because I had the opportunity to.”

Later on, he joked: “Yeah, what I need to do is I need to straddle the most current American phenomenon.” (Garfield’s father is from Los Angeles, while his mother is originally from Essex.)

Parade: “I Have an Unusual Relationship With Facebook”

Parade Magazine have released yet another new interview with Andrew in light of “The Social Network” premiering in New York over the past week. They talk “Social”, Andrew’s relationship with Facebook, his long-time girlfriend Shannon, and channeling Saverin.

“I have an unusual relationship with Facebook. I love it, but I hate it at the same time. It takes far too much of my energy and time — time I should be spending working or making myself a better person instead of looking at pictures of my friends having fun at great parties in London. It’s a terrible, terrible thing.”

“I think my girlfriend is proud of me and the fact that I’ve remained grounded. I think I’m just busier. That’s the main thing. I haven’t got as much time to mope about and complain that I’m bored. She travels with me when she’s not working. Whenever we have time, we’re together. When I’m on my own, you’d find me in the ocean surfing.” Read more …

L.A. Times: “‘The Social Network’s’ Andrew Garfield has a way with emotion”

Another article has appeared online with a brand new interivew (and photo, huzzah!) with Andrew. This time he talks “The Social Network”, comments on “Never Let Me Go” and being the new Spidey and fulfilling his childhood dreams.

In “The Social Network,” David Fincher’s look at the contentious founding of Facebook, opening Friday, Garfield plays Brazilian-born Eduardo Saverin, who, along with fellow Harvard undergrad and punk genius — as the marketing campaign would have it — Mark Zuckerberg ( Jesse Eisenberg), creates Facebook. But when the social networking site, initially known as thefacebook, swiftly becomes a global sensation — and a huge money-earner — Saverin and Zuckerberg have a falling out.

“He’s Mark’s only true friend and big brother,” Garfield says of Saverin in a phone interview. “There’s definitely a Cain and Abel relationship.”

In preparation for the film, based on the Ben Mezrich book “The Accidental Billionaires,” Garfield wasn’t able to meet his real-life counterpart. “It didn’t feel imperative because Aaron Sorkin wrote this incredibly detailed and idiosyncratic script in which he managed to flesh out a bunch of real people in all of their facets, so it was all there on the page. But in terms of doing some kind of mimicry performance, it didn’t feel necessary or important,” says the actor, who was born in L.A. but moved with his family to England when he was 3. Read more …

USA Today: “Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield break out of the pack”

A brand new interview (and accompanying photoshoot image!) has been released with Andrew Garfield and rumoured potential co-star Emma Stone, with USA Today.

Andrew Garfield is caught in stardom’s web

The work continues in another hotly anticipated title: The Social Network, the Oct. 1 release directed by David Fincher about the tangled web of ambition, greed and betrayal behind the creation of Facebook. Garfield is Eduardo Saverin, one of the Harvard students who was a co-founder of the popular website. “It’s just a bunch of kids battling, but there are no good guys or bad guys,” he says. “It’s all gray, just like life.”

This fan of the iPad has no Facebook page. He would rather stay in touch with people “via very direct routes.” However, he has Googled himself with mixed results. “There would be a lot of really nice people saying a lot of nice things. But then I get to the one person who would say, ‘His eyebrows look big. He ought to shave his eyebrows. He looks like a freaking Neanderthal.’ I thought, ‘That’s so mean. I can’t help my eyebrows, dude.’ ” Read more …
